"bottle" is the flask of nectar held by Amitayus <strong>and</strong> so<br />

signifies long life; while "heart" here also means<br />

essence or place in the heart. The essence of channels,<br />

of energy, <strong>and</strong> of the secret drops are all gathered in the<br />

heart-wheel.<br />

(8) The naturally pure mind, also found in Great<br />

Perfection, has the meaning of essence of truth as<br />

naturally pure, apart from "mind" or "heart."<br />

(9) The Buddha himself said, "I have a mystic nirvanic<br />

mind <strong>and</strong> this has been transmitted to Mahakasyapa."<br />

This is the first <strong>and</strong> well-known story of Chan <strong>and</strong> the<br />

meaning is again "essence", not heart or mind.<br />

Thus all our definitions of "Xin" with regard to<br />

meditation are finished.<br />

B. PROBLEMS OF TRADITION<br />

1. Do you regard Acarya Nagarjuna <strong>and</strong> Siddha<br />

Nagarjuna as one <strong>and</strong> the same person? (See Ch. VI,<br />

B.)<br />

In China, there are different translations of the name<br />

Nagarjuna, one being "Dragon-trees" <strong>and</strong> the other<br />

"Dragon-fierce." Although there are these two<br />

translations, we cannot say that there are different<br />

persons. In Tibet also, two persons are not<br />
