It is interesting to note here that the two main schools of<br />

the Mahayana approach sunyata in different ways. In<br />

the Vijnanavada, the elements are only indirectly seen<br />

as sunyata since they are said by the Idealist to exist by<br />

being dependent on wrong thinking.<br />

Idealist School: element (as the form part of<br />

consciousness)—consciousness—sunyata. The position<br />

is different in Madhyamika where both elements <strong>and</strong><br />

consciousness are directly seen to be sunyata:<br />

Middle Way School<br />

element—directly—sunyata.<br />

consciousness—directly—sunyata.<br />

As essence itself carries so many meanings, one should<br />

read the sutras carefully to determine precisely what is<br />

meant.<br />

In addition, a "Xin" of "Xin" occurs in the Great<br />

Perfection, meaning a heart in the heart, an essence of<br />

the essence, or, we may say, an excellent essence.<br />

(7) Boys-bottle-heart. This is a term of the Great<br />

Perfection (see Ch. XIV, B) <strong>and</strong> it needs a little<br />
