supplement to what we have already said. Apart from<br />

the worldly meanings given in Chapter III, its<br />

definitions for meditation are as follows:<br />

(1) Some minds are dominated by the sorrows—<strong>and</strong> by<br />

the Hinayana meditations one may speak of wanting to<br />

cure the "Xin" of sorrow.<br />

(2) In the five meditations of the Idealist school, the<br />

eighth consciousness is also called the king of<br />

consciousness—another meaning of "Xin."<br />

(3) The concentrated mind in samatha—though this<br />

meaning is not given in the Chinese dictionary.<br />

(4) The meditative mind, not taught in Confucianism, of<br />

samatha-samapatti.<br />

(5) The mind of tathata.<br />

(6) The mind of tathagatagarbha.<br />

The last two are not the same as mind in the Idealist<br />

School, for even though they do not emphasize the five<br />

elements, still they are included. These meanings do not<br />

have the sense of consciousness-only for the<br />

tathagatagarbha includes the material elements. Such<br />

meanings as essence, truth <strong>and</strong> center are found in<br />

Mahamudra <strong>and</strong> Great Perfection. The<br />
