way we can easily see from unbiased studies that many<br />

of the great religions present similar features which<br />

justify us calling them as a group, "heaven-<strong>and</strong>-man"<br />

yanas. Of course, just as they do not agree with each<br />

other about each one's exclusive claims, so we do not<br />

agree with them that any one of them, or all of them<br />

together, constitute the way to salvation.<br />

In particular, Christianity's claims of exclusive salvation<br />

were originally made in the days when it was<br />

establishing itself amidst a host of cults worshipping<br />

idols, the forces of nature, <strong>and</strong> even offering human<br />

sacrifice <strong>and</strong> other such practices harmful to man's<br />

spiritual growth.<br />

"For instance," cited Mr. Chen, "there are still in<br />

Bhutan some primitive beliefs that by killing men<br />

one gains in strength <strong>and</strong> cunning. Against such<br />

practices, is it not correct to say that teachings such<br />

as Christ's offer a real spiritual reward? This<br />

attitude of exclusiveness, then, is justified in such<br />

cases, but would have no point against<br />

Buddhadharma which in any case worships no idols<br />

<strong>and</strong> teaches positively non-harming <strong>and</strong> a noble<br />

path of spiritual development."<br />

Jesus confessed (as we noted in Chapter I, B, 4) that he<br />

had not taught everything. What he kept back <strong>and</strong> what<br />

his disciples were not prepared to receive were perhaps<br />

doctrines along the lines of Buddhism. Neither his<br />
