THE QUESTIONS OF BHADANTA<br />

SANGHARAKSHITA STHAVIRA<br />

For readers with some experience in meditation, our<br />

great merciful Bhiksu Sangharakshita had given me<br />

some problems on topics mentioned in our book,<br />

<strong>and</strong> these I shall now discuss. I was very much<br />

encouraged to prepare answers to them <strong>and</strong> I have<br />

done so under three classifications, which we shall<br />

deal with one by one.<br />

A. PROBLEMS OF PHILOSOPHY<br />

1. Christ's Teaching is much more than a<br />

"heaven-<strong>and</strong>-man" yana. He claims that he is the<br />

only-begotten Son of God <strong>and</strong> that ultimate<br />

salvation can only be gained through faith in him.<br />

How can this be a foundation for Buddhism? Surely<br />

a Western <strong>Buddhist</strong> should reject such teaching. If<br />

not, why should he become a <strong>Buddhist</strong>? He will<br />

remain a Christian. (See Ch. I, B, 3.)<br />

This is a question of preparation <strong>and</strong> I have answered it<br />

in two parts, the first on the principles of philosophy<br />

<strong>and</strong> the second based on circumstantial reasons.<br />

1. The inconceivable, the Dharmakaya, has a sacred <strong>and</strong><br />
