one has not realized that all are in the entity of<br />

Dharmakaya. One in many; <strong>and</strong> many in one.<br />

Once when practicing meditation in the company of a<br />

number of yogis of the same m<strong>and</strong>ala, one of these<br />

"schoolmates" in the Vajrayana asked me a question of<br />

this sort. At that time I was studying the Idealist<br />

School's philosophy <strong>and</strong> so answered him in this way:<br />

"The eighth- or store-consciousness is not restricted to<br />

individual minds, <strong>and</strong> does not belong to any 'person'.<br />

Common to all sentient beings, it is vast <strong>and</strong> impersonal.<br />

Though belonging to nobody, it is filled with everybody.<br />

As this is the case, providing one has come to realize<br />

this consciousness through meditation, then merits are<br />

easily transferred." He was much pleased with my<br />

explanation <strong>and</strong> praised it to other fellow yogis.<br />

However, we shall not be content with that explanation<br />

here. What, then, is to be done so that merits may be<br />

truly transferred? Many persons imagine that they are<br />

able to give away their merits, while other people do not<br />

believe that it is possible to do so at all. What is the<br />

explanation? First of all, the meditation practitioner<br />

must destroy the self, atman, etc. that is an obstacle to<br />

the attainment of the entity of Dharmakaya. This means<br />

that one must have practiced thoroughly the Hinayana<br />

meditations <strong>and</strong> have arrived at the stage of sunyata<br />

realization in the Mahayana. When one has realized the<br />

Dharmakaya, then he is in a position to influence others,<br />

since the self-idea has been purified in the Hinayana <strong>and</strong><br />
