thoughts of lust <strong>and</strong> even lead to a seminal discharge.<br />

At the middle point, the mind may be safely <strong>and</strong><br />

usefully concentrated <strong>and</strong> then held there, a practice<br />

known to many religions where the necessity of<br />

developing calm is taught.<br />

The practice with the rise <strong>and</strong> fall of the diaphragm<br />

must lead to the development of calm; it cannot be<br />

usefully practiced without this. Lacking samatha, no<br />

insight is possible. Meditators should learn to<br />

discriminate correctly the different types of meditation.<br />

3. What is the importance of transferring merits<br />

after one's practice of meditation? How can they be<br />

transferred for the benefit of other sentient beings?<br />

If a person asks this question, he has not yet recognized<br />

the entity of Dharmakaya. If one recognizes it <strong>and</strong> does<br />

not distinguish individual minds, then one is a sage; that<br />

is, one whose mind is linked to all through the<br />

Dharmakaya. Hence, as in Enlightenment separate<br />

minds are not to be found, separate merits do not exist<br />

either. Ordinary persons are only influenced by those<br />

around them with whom they have some connections.<br />

Even the Buddhas, to save beings, must have some<br />

conditional link with them or their saving merits cannot<br />

be effective.<br />

Either one can influence beings by one's merits or else<br />
