I could point out increase of digestive powers or the<br />

ability to overcome small diseases without trouble, but<br />

such things should not be sought deliberately, not even<br />

the mental joy one may feel.<br />

The first real benefit is that with meditation one can<br />

establish a central thought upon the Dharma (see Ch. II,<br />

B <strong>and</strong> Appendix II, A). This is a benefit both of<br />

philosophy (which we can then underst<strong>and</strong> better) <strong>and</strong><br />

practice (which we may perform with more<br />

concentration). After all, there are not only benefits to<br />

be gained in the physical <strong>and</strong> psychic aspects but also in<br />

the realm of philosophy.<br />

We should have a religion incorporating all these<br />

aspects; furthermore, one which also shows how to get<br />

out of birth-<strong>and</strong>-death. Through Hinayana <strong>Buddhist</strong><br />

meditations we can do this.<br />

But we do not want to save only ourselves—there are all<br />

the other sentient beings to be saved, <strong>and</strong> our ability to<br />

do this depends on our practice of the Mahayana<br />

meditations.<br />

Our actual rescuing them from the three realms comes<br />

with our accomplishment in the Vajrayana.<br />

Persons with the sorrow of lust, or greed, want to get<br />

everything for themselves, so to begin with they have to<br />

learn to desire only their own salvation—nirvana. When<br />
