whereas in China too much is burned. However, the<br />

Tibetan Sakyapa School has some special kinds of<br />

incense containing healing medicines. Other<br />

incense-sticks contain ingredients to drive away<br />

demons or arouse passionate love. But the gods like<br />

a little white s<strong>and</strong>alwood incense. Why is this?<br />

Because the gods of the various heavens breathe a<br />

scented air <strong>and</strong> their bodies are always fragrant. If<br />

you want them to approach, then make the place of<br />

meditation fresh <strong>and</strong> sweet-smelling; otherwise they<br />

cannot bear to come near you." Mr. Chen laughed<br />

<strong>and</strong> said, "I do not know whether the gods like the<br />

smell of butter, especially the butter with which<br />

some monks in Tibet used to smear themselves—ugh!<br />

Chinese temples <strong>and</strong> monks are usually clean."<br />

This is the last question arising from the sorrow of pride.<br />

One should not be conceited <strong>and</strong> think that no greater<br />

beings exist than mankind. That is just pride, just the<br />

sorrow of pride.<br />
