meditation. He exclaimed, "The Buddha has deceived<br />

me! There is no nirvana." He fell into hell.<br />

b. Samadhis of Nirvana. The meditator may practice <strong>and</strong><br />

attain the samadhi of the Hinayana nirvana, but mistake<br />

this for the Diamond Samadhi of the Buddha's nirvana.<br />

The Mahayana points out the difference between them.<br />

c. Different Nirvanas. Another possible mistake is to<br />

confuse the no-remainder nirvana with the non-abiding<br />

nirvana. The former is characterized by cessation of<br />

defilement <strong>and</strong> an abiding in the Dharmakaya—ultimate<br />

salvation from samsara. The latter is a dynamic state,<br />

wherein the salvation of others continues, <strong>and</strong> Buddhas<br />

continue to appear in many forms out of compassion for<br />

sentient beings. Not abiding anywhere, which<br />

characterizes this nirvana, the true state of salvation,<br />

means that one may appear anywhere <strong>and</strong> in any form,<br />

unlimited by space or time.<br />

4. False Realizations in Mahamudra <strong>and</strong> Great<br />

Perfection. There are eight erroneous ways:<br />

a. Holding on to enjoyment (an<strong>and</strong>a) will only result in<br />

rebirth in the desire-heavens (kamavacara devas).<br />

b. Clinging to the appearance of light will give birth in<br />

the heavens of form (rupavacara devas).<br />

c. Holding fast to non-discrimination gives birth among<br />
