I am very thankful to you for your suggestion that I<br />

should speak on the reasons people are interested in<br />

practicing <strong>Buddhist</strong> meditation. You have come from<br />

afar to listen <strong>and</strong> write. Once when the Buddha was<br />

about to preach, he noted Vimalakirti's absence from the<br />

assembly, <strong>and</strong> although he could have preached much<br />

more thoroughly himself, out of humility he sent his<br />

Prince of Dharma, Manjusri, to hear the words of the<br />

famed lay Bodhisattva. In the same way, you were born<br />

in the noble country of Engl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> although you know<br />

all this much better than I, still you have humbly come<br />

from a great distance <strong>and</strong> I must speak.<br />

Mr. Chen is pointing out here that it is the duty of<br />

not only the ordained Sangha to preach the Dharma,<br />

but it is also an obligation of the layman to do so if<br />

he is able.<br />

The last time our talk was from the outside inward;<br />

today it will be the reverse, <strong>and</strong> in this chapter we shall<br />

go from the remote to the immediate cause of the<br />

interest of the West in practicing meditation.<br />

A. REMOTE CAUSE—BY REASON OF THE<br />

DHARMA-NATURE<br />

The Dharma-nature is unlimited by either space or time,<br />

<strong>and</strong> neither East nor West imposes any limits upon it.<br />

The Buddha's Dharmakaya embraces the Dharmadhatu<br />

<strong>and</strong> neither East nor West is outside it. There is no<br />
