Once my friend, Mr. Chang, was meditating in<br />

Kalimpong <strong>and</strong> built a shrine-room higher than the<br />

temple of Siva nearby. Evidently neither the god nor the<br />

priests of that temple liked this. Every morning my<br />

friend used to recite the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment,<br />

but one day when he did so, a large black phallus<br />

appeared before him. Greatly disturbed by this<br />

manifestation, he came immediately to see me. I<br />

realized what the trouble was <strong>and</strong> told him, "You should<br />

repeat this mantra of Mahesvara, <strong>and</strong> then all will be<br />

well."<br />

The next morning when the phallus appeared, he<br />

repeated the mantra only once <strong>and</strong> it disappeared, never<br />

disturbing him again.<br />

Hinduism has followed Buddhism to the West, so<br />

Mahesvara may cause some trouble for <strong>Buddhist</strong>s there<br />

also. For this reason, this mantra, until now kept very<br />

secret, is given here so that it may be of use to the<br />

readers:<br />

OM MAHADEVA TSA VUPADEVISHYA<br />

HARALISA VASHAM GURUHO<br />

Sometimes, as we have said, one may obtain "reverse<br />

help" from this king of demons, but his usual tactics are<br />

to make many doubts arise, from quite worldly ones<br />

such as a casual relationship, to spiritual ones regarding<br />

the Dharma of the Buddha. This demon-king does not<br />
