c. Time. There is no time when they are not present:<br />

every time has its own special demons. In China, where<br />

time is measured by two-hourly watches, each named<br />

after an animal, during each watch a demon may come<br />

in the form of the appropriate animal to plague the<br />

meditator. Thus from eleven o'clock to one o'clock at<br />

night is the watch of the rat. Should a demon come in<br />

this guise at that time, just call out to him: "Oh, yes, you<br />

are the rat-demon!" By calling out his name in this way,<br />

if it is the demon, he will go. All the watches are named<br />

thus:<br />

d. Other Demons. If at the beginning of one's meditation,<br />

one feels the mind unquiet, then this disturbance may be<br />

due to the demon of non-<strong>Buddhist</strong>s. If the meditation is<br />

disturbed from the beginning to the end, it is an illness,<br />

not a demon. And if disturbance is felt only at the<br />
