Four renunciations are very helpful for meditation <strong>and</strong><br />

should be kept in mind. These are given by the guru<br />

Gampopa <strong>and</strong> overcome four bad conditions, as follows:<br />

a. Renounce one's native place to get rid of the evil<br />

condition of cause.<br />

"You have both become bhiksus <strong>and</strong> now live far<br />

from your homel<strong>and</strong>; it is good," commented the<br />

yogi.<br />

b. Renounce the occasions of all the five sorrows. For<br />

example, if one does not go to the market, or to the<br />

houses of prostitutes or to gambling dens, then one<br />

limits the sorrows' arising, thus cutting off the evil<br />

conditions that accompany them.<br />

c. Renounce evil friends <strong>and</strong> so rid oneself of the evils<br />

of condition.<br />

d. Renounce the inner four desires: for unhealthy<br />

emotions, beauty, food, <strong>and</strong> sexual intercourse; thereby<br />

the evil condition of continuity is cut off.<br />

These conditions <strong>and</strong> their riddance are very important.<br />

3. Distress Caused by Demons<br />

a. Types of Demons. Firstly, one should know what<br />

sorts of demons there are. In the sutras, a group of four<br />
