equivalent to the thirteenth voidness (the sunyata of<br />

phenomena) in the Mahayana list of eighteen. We<br />

should not be confused by their names, thinking that<br />

because those seem similar, that they actually represent<br />

the same reality. His equation is not correct, for<br />

Mahayana sunyata, as we have seen, lays more stress<br />

upon mentality, lacking a balancing emphasis on<br />

materiality. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, the four sunyatas of the<br />

Tantra concern the heavy sorrows of the five poisons<br />

<strong>and</strong> the material elements.<br />

Mahayana samapatti of sunyata is done while sitting<br />

quietly engaged in mental practice; Vajrayana<br />

samapattis of sunyata may be practiced during the<br />

vajra-love act when excitation is of physical forces great.<br />

It is when the semen is actually being secreted that it is<br />

necessary to attain <strong>and</strong> hold these four sunyatas.<br />

Summing this up, the yogi said:<br />

In all three yanas there is the same sunyata, but<br />

Hinayana doctrine retains the notion of small particles,<br />

while the Mahayana concentrates on meditating with the<br />

mind. How these contrast with active Tantric meditation<br />

when mentality <strong>and</strong> materiality are blended!<br />
