<strong>and</strong> satisfy her desires (providing he is not also a bhiksu)<br />

as a skillful means to save her. The Lord Gautama, in<br />

one of his past lives as a bodhisattva, used this method<br />

(see Ch. X, Part One, B, 2, a). Then, finally, in the<br />

Vajrayana there is a canonical discourse called the<br />

"Great Pleasure Vajra Sutra." It says that as everything<br />

is empty, worldly love also possesses the nature of<br />

sunyata. Whatever is sunyata, that also is pure.<br />

Everything is therefore pure, <strong>and</strong> everything includes<br />

desire or love, so this is also quite pure.<br />

This is the reason according to the doctrine of sunyata.<br />

b. Enlightenment is attained by the highest wisdom,<br />

which penetrates the lowest lust <strong>and</strong> subdues it. Nothing<br />

should be left outside this wisdom. If there remains<br />

something which cannot be subdued by wisdom, then<br />

this wisdom is not the final, perfect one.<br />

c. The negative method of destroying lust is by<br />

following the way of lust <strong>and</strong> using it to destroy itself.<br />

For instance, when we see a robber, we should follow<br />

after him to seize him. If we want to get a tiger-cub, we<br />

must go to the tiger's cave. When we are poisoned, there<br />

are medicines which are themselves poison but are used<br />

as effective antidotes. As another instance, when we fall<br />

down we should take advantage of the support offered<br />

by the same earth to get up.<br />

It is through lust that we acquire a human body. When<br />
