etc. This is not the main meditation "trunk" but rather a<br />

samapatti "branch." Nevertheless, it has to be<br />

completed.<br />

When all this is done, then one goes back to the main<br />

practice <strong>and</strong>, visualizing the m<strong>and</strong>ala of the yidam,<br />

places this in one's own body. This melts into the heart,<br />

which in turn contracts into the mantra. This again<br />

disappears into the bija, which finally melts away into<br />

sunyata.<br />

c. From the second sunyata of reduction the holy yidam<br />

appears again. It must come just as a fish jumps out of<br />

the surface of the ocean: The yidam must quickly<br />

appear from the voidness-ocean. In a flash, one sees that<br />

the nature of sunyata <strong>and</strong> its manifestation as the yidam<br />

are identified. When this stage has been experienced,<br />

this is the real Enlightenment of a Buddha.<br />

By the above three kinds of samatha-samapatti, birth,<br />

death, <strong>and</strong> the intermediate state are ab<strong>and</strong>oned one by<br />

one.<br />

4. Visualization of the Surroundings (M<strong>and</strong>ala)<br />

Mr. Chen produced a large photograph of a<br />

m<strong>and</strong>ala acquired from a departing Chinese<br />

<strong>Buddhist</strong>. It was not one which he had practiced<br />

himself <strong>and</strong> he was not sure which meditation it<br />

represented, for, as he explained, there are many<br />
