In the anuttarayoga doctrines there are some methods<br />

taught to get rid of birth, death, <strong>and</strong> the intermediate<br />

state (Bardo); however, in the lower Tantras there are no<br />

such methods.<br />

7. Realization<br />

Regarding realization, it is written in the yogatantra<br />

Mahavairocana Sutra that after sixteen lives, one will<br />

attain Full Enlightenment by practicing the third Tantra.<br />

In this life, at most, one will only attain the stage of joy<br />

(see Chapter XII, H). Anuttarayoga, however, promises<br />

the attainment of Full Enlightenment in this life.<br />

In the Western Tantric tradition, the highest yoga is<br />

always divided into four stages according to the four<br />

initiations. Tonight we can only talk about the first two<br />

initiations; the third, being very elaborate, must be left<br />

until next week.<br />

D. <strong>Meditation</strong>s of the First Initiation<br />

Before we discuss this, we should establish some<br />

definitions. The five small wangs imparted at the time<br />

of the first initiation in anuttarayoga <strong>and</strong> those given in<br />

the third yoga may seem quite similar to beginners.<br />
