Buddhas, but the exoteric doctrines are preached by the<br />

flesh bodies of the nirmanakaya Buddhas. In the former,<br />

both teacher <strong>and</strong> audience occupy a higher position, for<br />

it is said that only bodhisattvas of the eighth stage can<br />

be present at such preaching. Those who are not upon<br />

this high level need not despair, for their guru will<br />

surely help them by way of initiation.<br />

7. Salvation<br />

The Vajrayana surpasses the exoteric teachings because<br />

in the Tantras we find the principles of the two lower<br />

yanas serve as foundations, to which are added the<br />

expedient methods of Buddhahood. With such practice,<br />

the mystic functions easily emerge, <strong>and</strong> these conquer<br />

the five poisons (see Chapter VIII) in this world of five<br />

heavy evils. This is a kind of ultimate salvation. Here I<br />

refer the readers once again to our definition of<br />

<strong>Buddhist</strong> meditation (Chapter III, F): " … <strong>and</strong> the<br />

functions of salvation are all attained." Now all parts of<br />

the definition have been covered.<br />

C. How Anuttarayoga Excels the Lower Yogas<br />

1. The Eastern Tradition<br />

For us, anuttarayoga is without question the highest<br />

yana, but as we have said, Japanese Tantra is said to<br />

contain it <strong>and</strong> therefore in the Eastern tradition<br />

yogatantra is considered the highest. So for the sake of<br />
