commissioned rank, until by great effort he may even be<br />

able to gain the status of field marshal. But even this<br />

rank does not empower him to sit upon the king's<br />

throne.<br />

"Of course," said Mr. Chen, "an example is not a<br />

reason <strong>and</strong> just as we can make up one supporting<br />

the Vajrayana, so the Mahayana follower can<br />

construct examples favoring the Great Way."<br />

Our reason is that Tantra includes the initiations, when<br />

one, so to speak, is born into the palace. One who<br />

obtains them is able to sit upon the throne: He is a<br />

Buddha.<br />

3. Philosophy<br />

The philosophy of causation in the universe is quite<br />

different in these two yanas, being in the Vajrayana<br />

complete <strong>and</strong> reduced to scientific principles. Why do<br />

we say this? In the causation of the six elements the<br />

mental side is not overly stressed, nor is this causation<br />

theory biased only toward material elements. These two<br />

are identified in the six elements practice <strong>and</strong> the<br />

explanation given is very sound. In the sunyata school<br />

(Madhyamika), more stress is laid on mind <strong>and</strong> there are<br />

no meditations for the five material elements. The<br />

Idealist school (Vijnanavada) is similarly one-sided <strong>and</strong><br />

the tathata they expound is not a finished doctrine; <strong>and</strong><br />
