was late, <strong>and</strong> then sat down again. He said: "We<br />

In Japan, there are two schools, the Eastern Tantra<br />

(Shingon shu), <strong>and</strong> the eclectic school dealt with in the<br />

last chapter, Tendai shu (Tian Tai), both of them using<br />

Tantric methods for Enlightenment. The founder of the<br />

latter came to China to learn the Tantric tradition but he<br />

also studied Tian Tai <strong>and</strong> Chan. Elements of all three<br />

schools he gathered into one (so that Tendai of Japan is<br />

not the same as, though partly derived from, Tian Tai of<br />

China). He did, however, lay more stress upon the Tian<br />

Tai doctrines.<br />

In the Eastern tradition of Tantra, garbhadhatu is a base<br />

for vajradhatu but he inverted these, making<br />

garbhadhatu highest. He also said that the samadhi of<br />

Dharma-lotus is the most important, <strong>and</strong> that the<br />

Saddharma Pundarika Sutra (with which it is associated)<br />

belongs to the Tantras. This is wrong, for it does not<br />

distinguish the esoteric from the exoteric doctrines. This<br />

distinction has never been formulated in Tian Tai<br />

though it may become clear after reading this book.<br />

The Tian Tai in China established three philosophic<br />

truths about each dharma <strong>and</strong> each could be viewed<br />

from these three different viewpoints: the Real (sunyata),<br />
