3. Service<br />

Because the Buddhas <strong>and</strong> the m<strong>and</strong>ala are treated as the<br />

Pure L<strong>and</strong>, one's service to the Buddhas <strong>and</strong> one's<br />

offerings must be increased. For the Vajrayanist the<br />

Pure L<strong>and</strong> is here, not a paradise after death, <strong>and</strong><br />

temples are not necessarily external but internally seen<br />

by visualization, that very place in which a Tantrika<br />

lives is his temple. (For this reason, the Tantra should<br />

always be made in a hermitage where one can study<br />

diligently <strong>and</strong> practice the detailed <strong>and</strong> elaborate<br />

visualizations in peace.)<br />

4. Devas<br />

All the Tantras are methods in the position of<br />

consequence of Buddhahood. Some of these methods<br />

are not liked by the peaceful deities, so before practicing<br />

them one must first send these devas away.<br />

"You know," said the yogi turning to the writer, "you<br />

saw me perform that fire-sacrifice. At the beginning,<br />

I threw some offerings far away; that was for these<br />

gods <strong>and</strong> by this action they were dismissed."<br />

Many things which in the ordinary way of exoteric<br />

Buddhism are forbidden, may be done after purification<br />

<strong>and</strong> sublimation into the position of consequence with<br />
