Bhante noted here that there is nissaya in the<br />

Vinaya whereby student bhiksus should not leave<br />

their teacher unless they have asked his permission.<br />

But, he said, this is mostly only a formality these<br />

days.<br />

The Vajrayana also has its special precepts, among<br />

which is the resolve to develop the bodhicitta so as to<br />

gain full enlightenment in this life (see Ch. XIII, Part<br />

One, B, 7). Of course, in the Mahayana, bodhicitta is<br />

also important, but there it is to save all beings first,<br />

concern for one's own progress being put in the<br />

background. In Vajrayana one first vows to get<br />

sambodhi <strong>and</strong> then ultimately save all beings. The<br />

Tantras sometimes criticize exoteric Buddhism, for they<br />

say that the bodhisattvas of the lower stages have no<br />

real power to save others; they just help others to enter<br />

the Buddha's gate.<br />

2. Special Conditions for the Practice of the Lower<br />

Tantras<br />

a. When one enters this gate, through the lower Tantra,<br />

one should practice eighteen methods of service (kriya)<br />

to the Buddha:<br />

i. To purify the three karmas (of body, speech, <strong>and</strong><br />

mind). Then, concerning the three lineages:<br />

ii. With the bliss of the Tathagata-lineage, to purify the<br />

body.<br />
