colors—like a rainbow (a symbol of the<br />

wisdom-light) <strong>and</strong> has a special smell which is very<br />

"In the Vajrayana, flowers generally are a symbol of<br />

the female Buddha <strong>and</strong> therefore a sign of Wisdom.<br />

In the vajradhatu there are two foundations: one is<br />

purification represented by the lotus flower, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

other is sunyata or voidness, the sign of which is the<br />

vajra. These flowers, symbolic of both foundations,<br />

have just come in time, <strong>and</strong> for them I give you<br />

thanks."<br />

B. Why Do We Not Speak Directly About the<br />

<strong>Meditation</strong>s of Tibetan Tantra?<br />

1. Need for the Lower Tantras<br />

In Tibet, the Tantras contain all four yogas, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

three lower ones with which we are concerned here are<br />

included. In Tsong-khapa's Ngag-rim (a great<br />

guidebook to the whole system of the Vajrayana), many<br />

chapters deal with the first three Tantras. Also, in the<br />

Tibetan Tripitaka, all the sutras <strong>and</strong> all the sastras on the<br />

subject are to be found translated there. The two great<br />

m<strong>and</strong>alas of the Eastern tradition are also included.<br />

Nothing is left out, the Tibetan translations containing<br />
