e. First, to meditate on a sunset is a doctrine related to<br />

Hinayana practice <strong>and</strong> no such object is used in the<br />

Vajrayana.<br />

f. The "total" meditations (l <strong>and</strong> m) concern sunyata<br />

nature (the Buddha-form) <strong>and</strong> sunyata conditions (his<br />

surroundings) <strong>and</strong> this is, therefore, a practice of the<br />

Mahayana <strong>and</strong> not of the Vajrayana.<br />

E. Idealist School (Vijnanavada-Yogacara)<br />

<strong>Meditation</strong><br />

This is always mistaken by scholars to be a school of<br />

learning <strong>and</strong> not one of practice. Even the followers of<br />

this school themselves think only of learning the<br />

doctrine <strong>and</strong> of becoming scholars with much<br />

knowledge of philosophical subtleties, but few have any<br />

thought of following the Buddha. To correct this wrong<br />

tendency, I have introduced these five meditations<br />

which indeed have not been mentioned by many others.<br />

Xuan Zang transmitted knowledge of them to Kui Ji, his<br />

chief disciple, <strong>and</strong> he in turn taught them to his students.<br />

However, neither the great master nor those who have<br />

followed him practiced them, <strong>and</strong> they are not well<br />

known or to be found in common books. To underst<strong>and</strong><br />

them, one should know of the four parts into which this<br />

school divides consciousness: form-consciousness (of<br />

"exterior" objects), view-consciousness (when one<br />

thinks about them), <strong>and</strong> two further—self-witness<br />

consciousness <strong>and</strong> the witness of self-witness<br />
