2. The Practice of Samapatti<br />

Two types are given by the venerable Zhi Yi:<br />

a. "Medicinal" meditations to cure specific ills (just as<br />

we have already found in the five Hinayana samapattis:<br />

see Ch. VIII).<br />

b. Samapatti on truth (i.e., voidness).<br />

3. Altogether we find him advocating five kinds of<br />

meditation:<br />

a. For the rough mind (the three samathas already<br />

mentioned).<br />

b. Cures for the sleepy <strong>and</strong> disturbed mind.<br />

c. Sometimes the practice of samatha <strong>and</strong> sometimes<br />

that of samapatti.<br />

d. Cures for subtle obstacles occurring in the meditating<br />

mind.<br />

e. <strong>Meditation</strong> in which dhyana (from samatha) <strong>and</strong><br />

prajna (from samapatti) are identified.<br />
