There is a meditation verse of twelve lines known as the<br />

"Ripple-<strong>and</strong>-Vortex Stanza," which illustrates the total<br />

meditation of this school.<br />

Mr. Chen translated this line by line from a Chinese<br />

sastra of the Hua Yan School written by Du Shun:<br />

"To recognize the relativity of truth,<br />

One should meditate the Tathata pervading the body<br />

<strong>and</strong> its outside.<br />

Sentient beings <strong>and</strong> non-sentient beings are one<br />

entity;<br />

All are like the Dharmadhatu, fully present in all<br />

places.<br />

Only use the one mind to meditate on the one<br />

object;<br />

All subjects are recognized perfectly at the same<br />

time.<br />

In one subject is contained all the wisdom;<br />

In all the wisdoms there are all the Dharmadhatus.<br />

In one mind, continually meditate through many<br />

kalpas;<br />

Every kalpa of this one mind includes them all.<br />

Time <strong>and</strong> space are just like Indra's Net, infinitely<br />

multiplying everything;<br />

All the Buddha's wisdom penetrates everything<br />

without obstruction."<br />

To have some underst<strong>and</strong>ing of this, we should know<br />

that the word "one" used in the fifth line is not to be<br />
