one gains knowledge of the interpenetration of subtle<br />

events with the gross phenomena of our usual<br />

perception.<br />

g. The mystic gate of the region of Indra's net is seventh.<br />

In one jewel of the net, the light from all the other<br />

jewels is reflected. Each dharma in the world, a real<br />

event, reflects all the other phenomena.<br />

h. The mystic gate of the truth comprehended in all<br />

phenomena. In all phenomenal events the truth is seen,<br />

<strong>and</strong> in the truth are all phenomenal events.<br />

i. The ninth mystic gate is that of the various<br />

performances of separated dharmas in the ten periods,<br />

three in the past, three in the present, <strong>and</strong> three in the<br />

future, plus one period including all of them. All these<br />

periods, while appearing distinct, in truth interpenetrate<br />

to form one whole, <strong>and</strong> this applies to all beings <strong>and</strong><br />

events in the three times.<br />

j. The mystic gate of the perfect <strong>and</strong> bright virtues of the<br />

master <strong>and</strong> his family is the tenth. In this, the virtues of<br />

what is chief supplement those of the subsidiary factors<br />

<strong>and</strong> vice versa. "The master" may here mean the eighth<br />

consciousness <strong>and</strong> his "family" are the<br />

sense-consciousnesses <strong>and</strong> the mind-consciousness.<br />

Meditating on these ten mystic gates of causative truth<br />

has many powerful mystic functions. The samapatti<br />
