3. Prabhakari (Illuminating). This stage is so called<br />

because the bodhisattva obtains samadhi with the ability<br />

to hold dharanis (long incantations to various Buddhas,<br />

bodhisattvas, <strong>and</strong> deities), <strong>and</strong> is then pervaded by an<br />

infinite wisdom-light.<br />

4. Archishmati (Flaming Wisdom). The bodhisattva<br />

who reaches this stage has obtained success in sunyata<br />

<strong>and</strong> the fire of wisdom which burns up all sorrows has<br />

been established from his concentrations upon the<br />

thirty-seven Bodhi-branches.<br />

5. Sudurjaya (Difficult to Conquer). Some expedient<br />

methods are very hard to perform by experience of<br />

sunyata. One who reaches this stage is freed from such<br />

difficulties.<br />

6. Abhimukhi (Appearing Face to Face). What has<br />

appeared? The identity of good conduct (merits <strong>and</strong><br />

compassion) <strong>and</strong> sunyata is clearly seen by one. At the<br />

stage one makes great efforts to investigate by samapatti<br />

all the good deeds he or she has performed <strong>and</strong> finds<br />

that throughout they are void <strong>and</strong> formless.<br />

7. Duramgama (Traveling Far). In this stage one seems<br />

to be on a very long journey into the distance, all the<br />

time pressing on without either stopping or forcing<br />

oneself. The bodhisattva easily comes close to the pure<br />

unity of the function of sunyata (for one aspect of this,<br />

of a group of ten given in the Hua Yan philosophy, see<br />
