6. If one recognizes all these meditations very well; that<br />

is, if one only gets some knowledge, some good right<br />

view, even apart from accomplishment, then just this<br />

alone is a very rare thing, very precious.<br />

But one must hold these teachings in the mind so that<br />

the balancing forces of mercy <strong>and</strong> wisdom are identified.<br />

Most people are one-sided: if they lack wisdom, they<br />

may be merciful; whereas the wise may be weak in<br />

compassion. In our meditations on the bodhicitta good<br />

nature or compassion is balanced with the clever or wise<br />

aspect.<br />

Elizabeth Wordsworth has a little poem to illustrate our<br />

point.<br />

The writer here disentangled the following lines of<br />

this English jingle from amid the complexities of a<br />

page of Mr. Chen's notebook packed with Chinese<br />

characters:<br />

"If all the good people were clever,<br />

And all the clever people were good,<br />

The world would be nicer than ever<br />

We thought that it possibly could.<br />

But somehow 'tis seldom or never,<br />

The two hit it off as they should;<br />

The good are so harsh to the clever,<br />
