Outside no self; inside no self. The breath itself is<br />

sunyata; it is mind, it is wisdom; at this stage do not<br />

make any distinction; all should be identified. When one<br />

attains to stopping of the inner energy, then one should<br />

no longer think about "in" <strong>and</strong> "out," just carry on the<br />

sunyata meditation, concentrating undistractedly upon<br />

it.<br />

The ten meditations, on the four classes into which we<br />

have divided the practical method, are now finished.<br />

"And here," said Mr. Chen, consulting his watch<br />

<strong>and</strong> flicking over the many more pages of his<br />

notebook covered with closely written characters,<br />

"also we shall have to finish. If we try to complete<br />

the chapter tonight, you will still be writing at<br />

twelve o'clock. This chapter should be divided into<br />

two parts, of which this is the first."<br />

We stepped out in to a starlit night. A thous<strong>and</strong><br />

diamonds shone down upon us <strong>and</strong> the Ganges of<br />

the sky wound its luminous way from one horizon to<br />

the other. All was very vast, empty, <strong>and</strong> silent, a<br />

sight appropriate to our subject—may it long<br />

continue as peaceful.<br />
