foresight into the future, or cause the events of the<br />

distant past to be remembered in the present—as Lord<br />

Buddha often did. For such a one there is no limit; he<br />

can make the future into the past <strong>and</strong> the past into the<br />

future, <strong>and</strong> many wonderful supernormal powers occur.<br />

These are the possibilities for our own meditation but<br />

nobody has given instructions like these before. One<br />

might well ask: "Why?" To me it is very surprising!<br />

There have been so many "bodhisattvas" but they have<br />

not set forth such meditations.<br />

Mr. Chen laughed at this strange circumstance <strong>and</strong><br />

then repeated:<br />

Surprising, yes! And difficult to underst<strong>and</strong>. There was,<br />

as we have mentioned, the sutra <strong>and</strong> sastra study school<br />

for the prajnaparamita but not one school devoted to its<br />

practice. Such a state of affairs is very extraordinary <strong>and</strong><br />

I am sorry to have to report that it is so. Therefore, we<br />

must set up such meditations for the real practitioners<br />

who wish to follow the Way.<br />

c. Third meditation. The four voidnesses are listed in the<br />

diagram in Chapter IX, <strong>and</strong> regarding these the first<br />

meditation is on the sunyata of self, the second on the<br />

sunyata of others, while the third concerns the sunyata<br />

of non-dharma <strong>and</strong> the fourth meditation is on the<br />

sunyata of dharmalaksana.<br />
