But it is necessary to look out for the others, the evil<br />

ones who are unable to help themselves <strong>and</strong> by their<br />

own unaided efforts cannot find salvation.<br />

It depends on wisdom; if this is great, then there is much<br />

merit <strong>and</strong> no hindrance. So I have emphasized merit <strong>and</strong><br />

wisdom: both great—Mahayana; both<br />

small—Hinayana.<br />

b. The second positive reason: while in the Hinayana<br />

one does of course find alms giving, morality, <strong>and</strong><br />

patience all stressed very much, still these are not<br />

present in the sense of paramita (See Ch. VI, B, 1, a. iv)<br />

because they are not understood with the complete<br />

sunyata of the Mahayana. For this reason the Hinayana<br />

is rightly so named.<br />

c. The Lesser Vehicle follower aspires to liberate<br />

himself, to free himself from the sorrows. Only one<br />

person is considered; therefore, Hinayana is correctly so<br />

named.<br />

What is great here? The Mahayanist tries to develop the<br />

great bodhicitta to benefit others. A bodhisattva should<br />

have such a function from sunyata as to take the five<br />

small poisons of human beings <strong>and</strong> transmute them into<br />

the Great Poisons of Buddhahood. Names such as Great<br />

Pride, Great Lust, Great Ignorance, etc., (<strong>and</strong> all are<br />

characteristic of Buddhahood) are written in the<br />

Manjusri Name <strong>and</strong> Significance of Reality Sutra <strong>and</strong><br />
