Autumn had come to Kalimpong; yellow leaves were<br />

falling from the trees <strong>and</strong> the golden October sun<br />

shone warmly down. On this day, however, some<br />

dark clouds had gathered, the dark clouds of war.<br />

Throughout the morning jet fighters had been<br />

screaming through the heavens. The skies of<br />

Kalimpong, usually so serene, had become<br />

reminiscent of crowded English air near some air<br />

force base.<br />

The boys in the vihara, <strong>and</strong> no doubt most local<br />

inhabitants, run out excitedly to see these strangers,<br />

but the listener <strong>and</strong> writer could well do without<br />

such disturbances, which remind them much too<br />

vividly of the last world-wide madness which people<br />

call "World War II." At that time <strong>and</strong> during all<br />

other wars, greed, hate, <strong>and</strong> delusion are at their<br />
