first practice the purification in the Hinayana.<br />

Mr. Chen laughed, saying:<br />

Lamas marry; which body do they use? It is plain to see<br />

that since so many children result, it must be the body of<br />

flesh. If one practices the Hinayana meditations of<br />

purification, then through dhyana one may acquire a<br />

heavenly, or refined, body. After the sublimation by<br />

sunyata in Mahayana, the flesh-body is completely<br />

transformed into a wisdom-body, while by the<br />

Vajrayana practices this is transmuted into the diamond<br />

body of a Buddha. How then can a Vajrayanist marry<br />

for the usual purposes <strong>and</strong> have children in the normal<br />

manner? Such is impossible for those who have passed<br />

through all the purification processes.<br />

After these preliminary <strong>and</strong> general remarks, Mr.<br />

Chen went on to answer the question in the heading<br />

of this section, showing the relationship between the<br />

four mindful practices <strong>and</strong> the Japanese Vajrayana<br />

doctrines.<br />

a. First mindfulness<br />

In Japanese Tantra there are five progressive forms of<br />

the Buddha-body which correspond with the<br />

mindfulness of the body.<br />
