This latter is the "Vajrayana" of bad lamas who eat <strong>and</strong><br />

drink heedlessly, marry for pleasure, <strong>and</strong> who have little<br />

idea of the meaning of what they teach, let alone any<br />

idea of practicing it. They should learn from the<br />

example of our Lord Buddha, who preached <strong>and</strong><br />

practiced all three vehicles in his life. If the first two<br />

vehicles are not important (as some "tantric" teachers<br />

suggest) then why did the Buddha teach them? Why did<br />

he not directly preach the Vajrayana without the other<br />

two? Out of all the thous<strong>and</strong> Buddhas in this<br />

"auspicious aeon (Bhadra-kalpa)," only two preach the<br />

Vajrayana. One of these was Sakyamuni <strong>and</strong> the other<br />

will be the Buddha to come after Maitreya (to be called<br />

Simhanada <strong>and</strong> now taking Bodhisattva birth as the<br />

Guru Karmapa). Only two out of a thous<strong>and</strong> Buddhas<br />

care to give the Vajrayana teachings to the world; the<br />

others regard it as too difficult for people to underst<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> liable to mislead the foolish.<br />

But there is no contradiction between these yanas, as<br />

some suppose, the truth being that each one helps the<br />

next; therefore, not one of them can be left out from our<br />

practice. Je Tsong-khapa, to whom we have paid our<br />

homage, knew well enough the importance of<br />

purification, an emphasis which many tantric teachers<br />

ignore.<br />

Then, Mr. Chen said very earnestly:<br />

If one wants to realize the Vajrayana, then one must<br />
