G. Why among All the Hinayana <strong>Meditation</strong>s Do We<br />

Take Only These Nine? How Are the Others<br />

Included in Them?<br />

1. Let us first consider the thirty-seven Bodhi-branches<br />

(wings). All the factors among them may be reduced to<br />

only ten principles (this reclassification was made by<br />

the Dharma-master Vasub<strong>and</strong>hu in his very learned<br />

commentary on the Kosa called "the Buddha-upadesa<br />

sastra"). These ten are: mindfulness, tranquility, joy,<br />

equanimity, morality, investigation, diligence, wisdom,<br />

faith, <strong>and</strong> meditation.<br />

Now having reduced these factors to their basic qualities,<br />

let us see how the nine meditations include them all:<br />
