we should practice the other aspects of this meditation.<br />

ii. The impurity of the dead body. This we have already<br />

discussed in the five meditations <strong>and</strong>, from the impurity<br />

meditations there, we should have gained both the will<br />

to renounce <strong>and</strong> the perception of impermanence.<br />

iii. Impurity of perverted views about the body. One has<br />

the idea of "my" body or that this bodily contact<br />

"belongs to me." This means that ego is extended to<br />

other bodies over which we consider that we possess<br />

proprietary rights. We have ideas such as "my" wife, or,<br />

from the stimulus of bodily contact in kissing, of "my"<br />

girl. If this meditation is successful then the first of the<br />

sharp drivers (satkayadrsti) will be converted.<br />

iv. Incomplete realization of impurity of the body. This<br />

refers to the partial realization of sunyata in the<br />

Hinayana when, with a spiritual body, one "touches"<br />

nirvana. This view in the Lesser Vehicle is incomplete,<br />

yet we shall soon see how to choose meditations from<br />

among its practices to act as a bridge to the Mahayana.<br />

For our present consideration, the middle two are the<br />

most important, as the first has been dealt with, while<br />

the fourth is yet to come.<br />

But in this chapter, for the sake of easy <strong>and</strong> tidy<br />

classification, we should make the four foundations<br />

become five to fit in with the five sharp drivers. This<br />
