1. Satkayadrsti—the view of "my" of the body <strong>and</strong> not<br />

knowing that it is really a mixture of the five aggregates<br />

(the sk<strong>and</strong>has—form, feeling, perception, habitual<br />

tendencies, <strong>and</strong> consciousness). This is viewing what is<br />

merely a changing continuity as being "really my body,"<br />

<strong>and</strong> upon this, building the further idea of "myself."<br />

Things which surround "my body" are then thought of<br />

as "mine," whereas in fact there is no owner of them.<br />

From the union of the ideas of "I" <strong>and</strong> "mine" comes the<br />

false view of "myself."<br />

2. Antagraha—extreme or one-sided views. Since most<br />

people at first take hold of the ideas of "I" <strong>and</strong> "mine,"<br />

so when they come to think about death, their<br />

speculations veer to one of two extremes. Either they<br />

suppose that after dying, they cease to exist (the view of<br />

annihilation such as the communists <strong>and</strong> ordinary<br />

materialists), or they believe that though the body has<br />

died, something subtle remains, some spirit, some soul<br />

belonging to "me" somehow goes on (this is taught in<br />

all religions except Buddhism). In this way, such people<br />

w<strong>and</strong>er from one side to another, lost among a maze of<br />

one-sided views.<br />

3. Mithya—false view. This means not recognizing the<br />

law of cause <strong>and</strong> effect (in Buddhism this is better<br />

called "dependent origination" or "conditioned<br />

co-production"), which is the Buddha's teaching on the<br />

operations of karma. If one thinks that actions produce<br />

no results, then one may do evil without any fear <strong>and</strong><br />
