B. Two Purposes for Samapatti<br />

The positive purpose is to attain enlightenment. This,<br />

however, is in the position of consequence, so for us<br />

unenlightened worldlings there is no need to talk much<br />

about it. We are in the position of cause, so for us the<br />

negative purpose is the most important: that is, to rid<br />

ourselves of obstacles. When this is done, positive<br />

results will automatically appear. I have made a list to<br />

illustrate the hindrances:<br />
