A GOOD BRIDGE TO MAHAYANA MEDITATION<br />

Mr. Chen had heard of the writer's intention to visit<br />

Darjeeling for a few days at the end of Vassa (the<br />

monsoon retreat for <strong>Buddhist</strong> monks), <strong>and</strong> was<br />

afraid he might not return. He was reassured when<br />

he heard that nothing within our control would<br />

interfere with the book's completion. As this book is<br />

unique in content, <strong>and</strong> as hearer <strong>and</strong> writer have<br />

both found these explanations interesting <strong>and</strong><br />

helpful, so it must be finished so that others may<br />

also benefit <strong>and</strong> walk further on the way.<br />

Bhante remarked that the writer's notebook, quite a<br />

thick one, was now near its end <strong>and</strong> Mr. Chen<br />

promised many more pages of notes yet. "We are<br />

only on Chapter Nine," he said, "<strong>and</strong> there are at<br />

least six or seven to follow."<br />

A. The Homage<br />

To begin with, our homage is the same as in the last<br />

chapter, for the subject matter here is also basically of<br />
