aware of the slightest degree of beauty. He or she has<br />

this ability while going about in the world, not only<br />

during the time of meditation.<br />

b. Middle: The meditator can only see impurity in<br />

samapatti but not when he has stopped his investigation.<br />

c. Lowest: Impurity is only sometimes seen in a dream.<br />

2. Merciful Mind<br />

a. If one's mercy corresponds to sunyata, this is the<br />

highest degree of realization.<br />

b. If one can cause some happiness for enemies, this is<br />

the middle degree.<br />

c. If one is only able to reduce anger somewhat, this is<br />

the lowest degree.<br />

3. Resolution of the Elements<br />

a. When one has attained to perception of the<br />

egolessness of dharmas, this is the highest level.<br />

b. When one sees the natural order of five elements in<br />

the body <strong>and</strong> identifies the elements as earth, water, fire,<br />

air, <strong>and</strong> space, such attainment is middling.<br />

c. When there is only ability to harmonize fire <strong>and</strong> water<br />
