<strong>Meditation</strong>: the impurity of the body—related to<br />

merits.<br />

Between the hours of one <strong>and</strong> three, the lustful mind is<br />

strong, as the energy currents in the body are flowing<br />

downwards. The meditator should attend carefully to<br />

this practice during these hours in order that no<br />

downward flow of semen results.<br />

Second sitting.<br />

<strong>Meditation</strong>: Dependent Origination—to penetrate<br />

voidness.<br />

Night: One sitting.<br />

<strong>Meditation</strong>: Again, mindfulness of breathing, as<br />

this is good for attaining samatha, for developing<br />

samapatti, <strong>and</strong> for aiding the meditator to get a<br />

good rest.<br />

These instructions are for the person in whom the five<br />

poisons are about equal. Persons with pronounced greed<br />

or hatred should adapt this plan to their own needs.<br />

"However," continued the yogi, "I do not agree with<br />

the six types of character taught by some Hinayana<br />

teachers (but not in the sutras). I have tried to find<br />

these in myself without conclusive success. Much<br />

easier to distinguish, it seems to me, is a scheme of<br />

four character types:<br />
