f. The function here is to destroy ignorance, <strong>and</strong> this is<br />

achieved by the practice of these meditations.<br />

g. <strong>Practical</strong> realization:<br />

i. This twelve-linked wheel is the main instruction of<br />

pratyekabuddhas. This is its instructional quality.<br />

ii. The twelve conditions <strong>and</strong> the way they interact<br />

in the evolution of evil <strong>and</strong> the collecting of merit is<br />

the comparative quality.<br />

iii. The direct quality of realization: if accomplished,<br />

then one gains the stage of pratyekabuddha; but if<br />

this is united with realization of mahasunyata, then<br />

one attains to the first level of the Bodhisattva path.<br />

h. By reason of bhutatathata: because all beings are<br />

dependently originated <strong>and</strong> have no abiding self,<br />

therefore bhutatathata will be attained, since it too has<br />

no self.<br />

4. The <strong>Meditation</strong> on the Discrimination of the Six<br />

Elements. As a cure for haughtiness, pride, conceit, or<br />

egocentricity, sorrows known by many names, this<br />

meditation is recommended.<br />

a. Its self-nature is according to the individual natures of<br />

the elements: thus the earth-element possesses the<br />

nature of solidity, water of cohesion, fire of heat, air of<br />
