ii. Meditate on a discolored corpse (vinilaka), bluish <strong>and</strong><br />

blotchy in color. Which desire is thereby ab<strong>and</strong>oned?<br />

Desires for a fine complexion <strong>and</strong> beautiful color.<br />

iii. Meditate with the three kinds of corpses to destroy<br />

the desires for a nice face <strong>and</strong> a shapely figure. For this<br />

meditate on a corpse swollen (vyadhmataka), decayed<br />

(vipadumaka), <strong>and</strong> bitten by animals (vikhaditaka).<br />

iv. Meditate with a corpse messy with blood <strong>and</strong> with<br />

one discharging pus to renounce the desires of sensual<br />

love <strong>and</strong> sexual attraction.<br />

v. Meditate on bones <strong>and</strong> powdered bones to give up all<br />

attachment to smoothness, fineness, <strong>and</strong> subtlety in the<br />

human body.<br />

vi. A total meditation on all nine stages causes one to<br />

renounce the desire for a human form <strong>and</strong> the imagined<br />

desirability of it.<br />

One should, if possible, have an actual corpse or<br />

skeleton for one's practice. Although such may be<br />

difficult to obtain now, the best results are certainly got<br />

with bodily remains, but concentration upon a picture<br />

will also be fruitful.<br />
