the sense of mathematical quantity but their practice<br />

only increases merits (<strong>and</strong> results in birth in one of the<br />

heavens); it is not concerned with salvation. The<br />

character of these four is very good but we shall have a<br />

chance to talk about similar qualities in the six<br />

paramitas <strong>and</strong> in the Tantras (though in different<br />

contexts) so we have left them here.<br />

E. Why do we not discuss "pure Dhyana"?<br />

Having talked in the last section on "fundamental taste<br />

Dhyanas," we may proceed to explain those called<br />

"pure." These have been included in the second division<br />

of meditations called "Worldly States of Dhyana" (See<br />

Ch. III). The nine contemplations of Impurity, which are<br />

both Hinayana <strong>and</strong> outward in object, are included in<br />

the Beyond the World division there, called<br />

"investigating dhyana." Everything we talk about will<br />

include these others.<br />

F. A Note on the Five Dull Drivers<br />

These are very common, <strong>and</strong> are also known as the five<br />

sorrows or the five poisons. Many of the readers of this<br />

book will have plenty to do in making the basic<br />

renunciations <strong>and</strong> purifications of the Hinayana, so our<br />

account of the obstacles <strong>and</strong> the meditations to<br />

overcome them, as taught in that Vehicle, should be<br />

particularly complete.<br />
