People only wish for something easy nowadays; they do<br />

not want to hear about renunciation <strong>and</strong> morality, <strong>and</strong><br />

this is indeed sad.<br />

Mr. Chen spoke about this with very great feeling,<br />

even in tears.<br />

With my own blood <strong>and</strong> tears, in every one of my works,<br />

I have stressed the importance of the Hinayana. I have<br />

done everything to promote its practice.<br />

With deep feeling which communicated itself to the<br />

two bhiksus present, the yogi cried out:<br />

If there is no Hinayana, the foundation of the whole<br />

Dharma has gone, <strong>and</strong> there is no basis for meditation.<br />

If there is no Hinayana meditation, then there is no<br />

progress through the other yanas. Without this progress,<br />

there can be no final realization.<br />

Said the yogi, wiping his eyes:<br />

But there are many people these days who like Tantra or<br />

Chan (Zen) <strong>and</strong> play at practicing them without so much<br />

as a glance at the basis of these practices. Delusion<br />

leads them to neglect the very foundation of their<br />

meditations.<br />

Tantra <strong>and</strong> Chan are like the top of a tall building; to<br />

attempt to build only the top without even cutting the<br />
