h. Of not throwing away the yoke: this means the mind<br />

must not be left to w<strong>and</strong>er toward sense-objects <strong>and</strong><br />

thus forget samatha.<br />

i. Of the main practice of samatha.<br />

2. Now we come to the Four Arisings of Resolve:<br />

a. The resolve of training the mind. This means that one<br />

should renounce the attached, worldly mind, training it<br />

to desire only samatha.<br />

b. The resolve to comfort the heart with the delights of<br />

the Dharma.<br />

c. The resolve to make the mind easy <strong>and</strong> comfortable,<br />

full of tranquility (prasrabdhi) <strong>and</strong> free from all<br />

oppression. To attain this, all gross discriminations<br />

should be renounced.<br />

d. The resolve to obtain perfect view. Think of this long<br />

<strong>and</strong> deeply. Remember that it is only by the practice of<br />

samatha that wisdom can arise.<br />

All the above sections <strong>and</strong> their factors deal with<br />

samatha <strong>and</strong> its relation to the psyche. Now we shall<br />

consider the physical conditions of samatha.<br />
