As soon as I arrived, I asked, "Is there a Chinese<br />

<strong>Buddhist</strong> temple here?" Finding that a small one was<br />

established in the compound of the Gelugpa monastery,<br />

I went <strong>and</strong> found a statue of the red-faced protector long<br />

familiar to me, Guan Gong, worshipped in Tibet as<br />

Gesar. Having made my offerings to him, I then found a<br />

Hindu temple quite nearby <strong>and</strong> made my puja to the<br />

Krishna image within it. Thus both deities became my<br />

protectors <strong>and</strong> I have had no trouble since I came here.<br />

Of the many stories connected with Guan Gong, Mr.<br />

Chen then related one to show that deity's power as a<br />

Dharma protector, following this with the experience of<br />

another friend.<br />

The c<strong>and</strong>les for the shrine in China are not made of<br />

white wax, but are red <strong>and</strong> made from the fat of<br />

ox-bones. Mice often come to nibble at these during the<br />

night.<br />

A Chan master noticed this <strong>and</strong> told Guan Gong, who<br />

was a protector at the temple, that he was not much use<br />

when even the c<strong>and</strong>les of his own shrine were being<br />

eaten. "You, a protector, cannot even keep mice away,"<br />

accused the master. During the night, a mouse came <strong>and</strong><br />

while it was eating the c<strong>and</strong>le, it fell down upon him<br />

<strong>and</strong> the little creature died. The next morning when the<br />

Chan master saw the dead mouse, he scolded the god,<br />

saying: "You are not merciful; I did not tell you to kill<br />

the mice, only to drive them away!" The following day,<br />
