Great importance is also given to sila as may be seen<br />

from the many stanzas on this subject in the<br />

Dharmapada:<br />

"Hasten to do good, restrain your mind from evil.<br />

Whoever is slow to do good, his mind delights in<br />

evil."<br />

"Let none find out the faults of others<br />

Nor what is done or left undone by them.<br />

But one should only see<br />

What is done <strong>and</strong> not done by oneself."<br />

"Do not speak harshly to anyone,<br />

Those spoken to thus will retort.<br />

Indeed, angry speech is hurtful;<br />

Beware lest others retaliate."<br />

"Whoever in this world<br />

Destroys life,<br />

Utters lies,<br />

Takes what is not given,<br />

Consorts with others' wives,<br />

Or is addicted to taking strong drinks—<br />

Such a man digs up his own root (of goodness) in<br />

this very world."<br />

"The wise are controlled in body,<br />

Controlled in speech are they,<br />

And controlled in mind (as well).<br />
